What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that caused patches of skin to become inflamed, red, and itchy. 

Eczema can affect the skin by causing the following:
  • rough, scaly patches
  • crusting
  • swelling
  • dark coloured patches

Eczema can be managed even though it is a common skin condition. The severity can range from mild, moderate to severe. Living with eczema can be a continuous challenge.

It is also important to note that eczema is not contagious.

Types of Eczema

Eczema can be categorized into 6 different types:
  1. Atopic dermatitis
  2. Contact dermatitis
  3. Dyshidrotic eczema
  4. Discoid eczema
  5. Varicose eczema
  6. Asteatotic eczema

Eczema is a generic term for dermatitis, which refers to the inflammation of the skin. All categories of eczema results in redness and itching, which some will cause blister or peeling. 

Each type of eczema has different symptoms, triggers and treatments, thus it is essential to understand which type(s) one has, in order to best manage it.
